The Gorge is a film that hooks you in with a solid mystery-turned-romance setup, but it falls flat when it matters most. The first half actually works. There’s a strong intrigue surrounding the characters, the mystery feels solid, and the slow-burn tension keeps you hooked. The whole anticipation of their connection is arguably more engaging than the actual payoff, but it’s still handled quite well. The creature design is fantastic. The film also has some nice visuals. There’s an eerie atmosphere with rain, lightning, and fog that adds a lot to the mood. It also mixes genres in an interesting way, mixing horror, science-fiction, and thriller elements while keeping romance at its core. And yes, you can see fun little nods to Aliens, Annihilation, and even Whiplash and The Queen’s Gambit, which is a nice touch. But as the film starts to reveal its cards, it gets even more clunky. Some of the plot feels forced, and some familiar plot twists are used, making things feel predictable. The dialogue, which was already nothing special, really dries up in the second half, making many moments feel hollow.
Anya Taylor-Joy, surprisingly, gives a good performance. She has that natural screen presence that makes any role more appealing. Miles Teller is good too, and their chemistry is okay, but nothing special. The problem is that as the mystery starts to unravel, the story just kind of fizzles out. There comes a point where you can feel the film losing its grip, as if it has no idea how to maintain the suspense it is trying so hard to build. The tension drops, the pace slows down, and by the time it reaches the end, it becomes clear that the film doesn’t stick the landing. The final moments are pretty bad. It’s a shame because the film had something going for it. It had good ideas, solid visuals, and a unique blend of genres. But in the end, it’s like watching a magic trick, where the setup is great, but the reveal is just… disappointing. A solid start, a disappointing fall, and an ending that leaves you feeling like you watched something that could have been even better.
